Green Networking
Energy optimization at networks beneficial for the environment and economically sustainable
With the current growth in user demand, future wireless access networks will have to offer capacity, which is 500-1000 times larger than todays 3G networks. Since the capacity increase through advanced physical layer techniques is limited, one promising technique to increase capacity is to shrink cell sizes, also using mmWave technologies (e.g. in 60 GHz range). A very dense deployment results in low-power, small-cell networks with very high spatial reuse, which faces several challenges such as increased cost and energy consumption. Heterogeneous backhaul solutions are required to connect small-cells with the core network. However, such networks typically have been designed individually without considering joint optimization. The goal of SOCRA is to research and develop architecture and algorithms for energy efficient capacity on demand 5G mobile communication network combining robust network optimization algorithms, software defined networking and mmWave technology.
SOCRA is a collaboration between Karlstad University, Huawei Technologies Sweden, Gotmic and Bluewave.
