BAMPLA
Design and Evaluation of Broadband Networks and Services
Introduction
The research of this group is focused on the design and modelling of optimal resource management in networks and audiovisual services. The aim of BAMPLA is to provide dynamic mechanisms that optimally fit the user's requirements with the resources offered by both the Internet network and the content providers, minimizing at the same time the energy consumption.
These mechanisms are based on Software Defined Networks (SDN) and Information Centric Networks (ICN) as the basis of the evolution of the Internet architecture.
Those activities lead the group to participate in various national and European projects in the field of the federation and virtualization of networks and services, traffic monitoring of the European research network (Geant3), networks based on content distribution, and new proposals of Internet architectures.
Research Topics
- Proposal and modelling of new architectures for the Future Internet (Internet of Things, Internet of Services, Internet by and for people, and Internet of Contents).
- Design of new management and optimal resource allocation mechanisms for communications networks.
- Software Defined Networks (SDN).
- Virtualization of networks and services.
- Underwater Networks.
- Next-generation fixed access networks and hybrid fix-mobile architectures.
- Access and transport protocols for high-speed optical networks.
- Design of energy efficient networks.
- Traffic Monitoring.
- Scalable traffic measurements, algorithms, sampling, estimation and prediction of IP traffic.
- Network Coding.
- Advanced audiovisual services over IP networks.
Highlighted projects
At European level, the most relevant projects are CANDLE, TIFANIS, PROMISE DRMSolutionNG, HDVIPER and FEDERICA, and the networks of excellence ENEXT, EURONGI, EUROFGI and EURONF. The latter aims at designing the next generation of Internet protocols and services.
All these research projects are focused on the design and evaluation of different aspects of Internet technology and protocols, IP services and applications, and resource management.
At a Spanish level, the group has participated in various PROFIT and CIDEM projects and, in two CENIT projects (i3media and Vision). He also leads National Research Projects, focused on three areas of the group research : network protocol access and optical transport, resource management and IP services. This research activity leverages the projection of the group at international, national and local levels. And, jointly with the technology transfer , through the i2CAT Foundation , to enterprises such as VozTele, ALPI, Vodafone, TID, and Auna CCRTV, among others, allow the BAMPLA group being considered of one of the more relevant Spanish groups in Internet technologies.
